February 2012: YOU Are Responsible!
by Paul Mitchell Schools on 2/17/2012Index
Dear Future Professionals and Industry Friends,
Have you ever noticed that you can walk into two different businesses that produce the exact same product or service, and yet one feels contaminated and unappealing while the other feels welcoming and comfortable? Is it because the employees at Company A just happen to be more negative and gossipy than the employees at Company B? Hardly! But without a culture and sense of community, people are just “hanging out,” and that’s never been a good thing. I believe we call it loitering.
When applied to the business world, a culture is a set of shared attitudes, values, goals, and practices that characterize a company or corporation. A community is more inclusive of anyone and everyone; it’s defined as a unified body, or a people with common interests. Although individuals may have different backgrounds, beliefs, and lifestyles away from work, when they come together in a workplace community, the goal is to get them on the same page, believing in the same purpose, and striving for a common end result.
By the way, even if you don’t possess the title of leader, owner, or manager, that doesn’t mean you’re exempt from helping to create that kind of culture and community. Leadership is not a position; it’s a mind-set and an attitude. If your mind-set and purpose are to create a wonderful environment, then your position and title won’t matter, because you can provide more effective leadership than the big guy or gal in the big office.
“If it’s to be, it’s up to me.” I’m not sure where that quote came from but I learned it from my mother, and I’ve said it to myself and others thousands of times. I’m sure you’ll agree that sometimes the brand-new employee who’s only worked at the company for a few months and is at the bottom of the totem pole can do more for building morale, teamwork, and niceness than people who’ve worked there for 20 years or more. Everyone in a company, corporation, office building, store, or business must assume responsibility for its overall success. We are all responsible!
— Winn Claybaugh
Dean and Cofounder of Paul Mitchell Schools
Jane Wurwand, a tenured, United Kingdom-trained skin therapist new to the American esthetician industry, recognized the need for postgraduate skin and body therapy education in the United States. While her training had been comprehensive, she noticed American students entering the industry licensed but under-trained and under-respected. Putting her education into action, Jane opened a small classroom in Marina del Rey, California, in 1983, offering hands-on postgraduate training to licensed skin therapists. Today, her International Dermal Institute (IDI) is considered the international gold standard for postgraduate skin and body therapy training, with 37 locations worldwide.
While teaching at IDI, Jane developed and founded Dermalogica, a product line free of common irritants and ingredients. Dermalogica immediately upset the prevailing paradigm of beauty and glamour by classifying skin care as a health issue rather than a cosmetic concern. Dermalogica also introduced a powerful new element into the brand identity: the specialized expertise of the professional skin therapist. Now in its 25th year, Dermalogica is sold in over 80 countries and prescribed more often than any other product available.
Named one of the most influential women in the American beauty industry by Salon News magazine, Jane Wurwand has lectured at all major trade events, written skin-care columns for numerous magazines, produced audio and video training series on skin care and body therapy, and currently writes a regular blog at www.dermalogica.com.
In this lively MASTERS interview with Winn Claybaugh, Jane shares her spunk, humor, and 25-plus years of experience in the skin care world. She hilariously describes her early years as an arrogant young esthetician (Why wasn’t she booked? “It was everyone else’s fault”), her opinions on stealing clients (“They weren’t stolen, you LOST them!”), and how she despises the “three Ps” – pity parties, prima donnas, and pouting.

Las Vegas will glitter and glow even more than usual when Paul Mitchell Future Professionals arrive for their 27th annual Caper event. Held February 20–22, 2012, at Caesars Palace, the smoke-free, alcohol-free, hands-on educational extravaganza will draw 200 staff members and 2,500 Future Professionals who earned the trip by selling specially packaged Paul Mitchell products.
Top leaders in and out of the professional beauty industry will deliver two days of nonstop education, motivation, inspiration, and fashion. Special guests include:
- 21st-century icon Robert Lobetta, a hairstylist, salon owner, product creator, marketer, teacher, public speaker, photographer, director, and artist. Robert has been called a genius and the most creative hairdresser of his time. This will be Robert’s first appearance at Caper.
- Tabatha Coffey, host of Bravo TV’s Tabatha’s Salon Takeover and Tabatha Takes Over. No stranger to Paul Mitchell Schools, Tabatha was interviewed by Dean and Cofounder Winn Claybaugh in his MASTERS audio series. She is making her first appearance at Caper this year.
- Comedian Kathy Buckley appeared at Caper last year and has spoken at numerous Paul Mitchell Schools. A huge favorite of the Future Professionals, Kathy is one of the most inspiring speakers you’ll ever hear. Born deaf and diagnosed as mentally retarded, Kathy shares a powerful message of courage and hope. Joining her on the Caper stage will be John Autry, an alumnus of Kathy’s No Limits organization best known for his appearances on Glee and Oprah.

Future Professionals arrive and check in on February 20, then visit the Career Fair to mingle with salon representatives, practice their interview skills, and learn about opportunities across America. They can also pop into the Caper Mall, featuring a full line of Paul Mitchell logo wear and educational tools. Monday night is a “free night.”
On February 21, Paul Mitchell Cofounder and Chairman John Paul DeJoria, Co-owner Angus Mitchell, Global Artistic Director Robert Cromeans, and Paul Mitchell Schools Dean and Cofounder Winn Claybaugh kick things off with a warm welcome, followed by five fashion presentations featuring Paul Mitchell artists, educators, artistic directors, students, and staff. Led by school owner and Advanced Academy team member George Morales, the students will be featured in three presentations: the opening, the Mitch presentation, and the Awapuhi segment. The “pros” take over for the cutting, color, and style segments. Day one ends with a favorite Paul Mitchell tradition: the White Party, where Future Professionals can enjoy “photo ops” with their favorite stars and dance the night away. Overall show coordinator is Brennan Claybaugh, Director of Education for Paul Mitchell Schools and Advanced Academy.
February 22 features hands-on classroom rotations and a closing show filled with fun, fashion, and special presentations. Cosmetology students rotate through three 2-hour classes (Cutting, Color, Look and Learn), while skin care students spend their day in Hands-On Makeup. The event concludes with a grand finale featuring the show teams from A Robert Cromeans Salon, Angus Mitchell Salon, Lunatic Fringe, and Kelly Cardenas Salons.
Industry Superstars Join Forces with Paul Mitchell Schools
Showing that compassion knows no boundaries, 20 beauty industry icons have each volunteered to donate a day of education for the Paul Mitchell Schools annual “FUNraising” campaign, which has raised over $6 million to date. The superstar lineup features leading artists and educators in and out of the Paul Mitchell realm, including Tabatha Coffey, star of Bravo TV’s Tabatha’s Salon Takeover and Tabatha Takes Over; Ted Gibson, celebrity hairstylist and hair expert on TV’s What Not to Wear; Beth Minardi, celebrity hair colorist and recipient of the 2010 NAHA Lifetime Achievement Award; and Vivienne Mackinder, six-time NAHA winner, including the 2009 Lifetime Achievement Award.
“My relationships with these people have nothing to do with the brand I’m aligned with,” said Paul Mitchell Schools Dean and Cofounder Winn Claybaugh. “We believe in being inclusive rather than exclusive, and I’m grateful to these amazing superstars who have no problem crossing over to support our Paul Mitchell Future Professionals in raising a ton of money for some very worthy causes.”
The top 20 FUNraising schools in this year’s campaign will receive a day of education in their school with one of the following:

Advanced Academy Welcomes 5 New Members
Brennan Claybaugh, director of education of Paul Mitchell Schools and the Advanced Academy, announced the addition of five new members to the Advanced Academy team. Emma Long, Jenni Bybee, and Monique Sapenter have met the rigorous requirements for admission to the Texture Team. Nikki Ramos joins the Color Team, and Jasmine Brock is the newest member of the Makeup Team.
“It’s a long road,” Brennan says. “To even be considered, candidates must be employed at a Paul Mitchell School and reach Level 3 certification in their specialty (cutting, color, texture, or makeup). They must be highly recommended by their school owner, a current Advanced Academy team member, or another high-ranking staff member.”
Once approved, candidates are invited to attend Advanced Academy training (held three times a year) and to shadow key team members at Advanced Academy classes and at trainings and certification sessions at other Paul Mitchell Schools—all at their own expense. Candidates must demonstrate exceptional skills and attitude and complete Level 4 certification before joining the team.

Paul Mitchell Schools Hold 2nd Annual Ann Bowler Day
Nationwide Network Brings Joy and Beauty to Seniors Everywhere
When Paul Mitchell Schools’ Dean and Cofounder Winn Claybaugh lost his good friend Ann Bowler, he wanted to do something to honor her memory. “Ann was 92 years old and an absolute joy to be around,” Winn said. “She was funny, witty, incredibly intelligent, politically and community active, and my best friend. I was very saddened by Ann’s passing, and when my heart aches the only thing I know to do is to get busy and give back.
“During our time together, each and every time I asked Ann if there was anything I could do for her, her one and only response was, ‘Just be my friend.’” Inspired by that simple request, Winn called upon the student-run Be Nice (Or Else!) teams at Paul Mitchell Schools to hold “Ann Bowler Day” in 2010, and it was a resounding success. His invitation to repeat the event in 2011 met another overwhelming response. Students and staff members flocked to nursing homes and senior centers across America, singing Christmas carols, bearing small gifts, and offering mini manicures and hairdos. They also made it a point to sincerely thank the nurses, doctors, and caregivers who look after these beautiful people. Most important, they gave the gift of their time, providing love and companionship to their new friends.
“Of all the people I could have taken as my date to the 2009 Paul Mitchell Schools FUNraising dinner, who did I want there with me? My best friend, Ann Bowler,” Winn said. “She loved having her photo taken that night with John Paul DeJoria, Donny Osmond, Leeza Gibbons, and Larry King, and she was captivated by all the magic created by our Paul Mitchell Schools. I’m sure she would be very proud to see the magic our schools now create in her honor.”
Here are just a few examples of the activities held by Paul Mitchell Schools:
- Paul Mitchell The School Las Vegas held a Christmas sing-a-long at a nearby assisted living center.
- Paul Mitchell The School Green Bay’s newest students held a “Mini Mani” event at Woodside Manor in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
-
Paul Mitchell The School Cincinnati split into groups and visited three different nursing homes, spreading cheer across the tri-state area. - Paul Mitchell The School San Diego sang Christmas carols, played board games, and gave hand massages at a local nursing home. “When we walked in, it was so quiet,” said Be Nice (Or Else!) team leader Lizzy Becknell. “Of course we brought the Paul Mitchell energy in, and within 20 minutes, the entire mood of the nursing home changed.”
- Paul Mitchell The School Arlington visited Oakwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Arlington, Texas, bearing gifts and snacks, singing Christmas carols, and providing manicures. One instructor bought 80 pairs of socks so no one would be left out. “It was such a joy to see the look on the residents’ faces as we traveled from room to room, spreading Christmas cheer,” said Be Nice Team Creative Master Misty Staples.
- Paul Mitchell The School Houston started out in two tiny rooms at Parkwood Place nursing home, but the buzz began to spread and their two rooms turned into five, on three different floors.
- Cactus Academy, A Paul Mitchell Partner School in Garden City, New York, has made Ann Bowler day a quarterly tradition. Instructor JoAnne Turano says, “Now all our ‘special friends’ at the Gerwin Nursing Home know about our Be Nice (Or Else!) club and Ann Bowler and what a lovely woman she was.”

Fall Events Show Paul Mitchell Schools’ BE NICE Culture
September and October were nice months all around the country—and not because of the weather or the beautiful fall foliage. Our Paul Mitchell Schools and our BE NICE culture made them special months.
REMEMBERING 9/11 – During the week of September 11, staff members and Future Professionals held a variety of events to honor first responders and pay tribute to those who lost their lives on that tragic day ten years ago. Many schools hosted special weeklong events for firefighters and police, offering free haircuts and other services. Others raised money for memorials, widows and orphans funds, and other similar causes. Here are just a few examples of the BE NICE culture in action:
- Paul Mitchell The School North Haven invited local fire and police departments for a breakfast to honor their service. After a presentation by the fire chief, each student phoned someone to say “I love you” — maybe someone they’d rushed by that morning without stopping to say good-bye.
-
Pulse Beauty Academy, A Paul Mitchell Partner School in Downingtown, Pennsylvania, raised $2,600 to help build a 9/11 memorial at their new fire department. - Paul Mitchell The School St. Louis visited their local fire station, taking cards, banners, Paul Mitchell products, and free haircut gift certificates. The students hoped to make the firefighters’ day, but said it was the firefighters who created magic for them, inviting them to tour the firehouse, play on the fire engine, and even slide down the fire pole.
- Vanguard College of Cosmetology, A Paul Mitchell Partner School in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, visited local fire, police, and National Guard stations, passing out free haircut flyers and sharing a message of love and gratitude. They also visited the 9/11 monument at a local park.
- Michael’s School of Hair Design and Esthetics, A Paul Mitchell Partner School in Bedford, New Hampshire, raised $400 for the nonprofit New Hampshire Search and Rescue Dogs and $100 for the local animal shelter.
NAUTICA MALIBU TRIATHLON – On September 18, over 4,000 participating athletes raised over $1.1 million for Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. Representing “Team Paul Mitchell,” 35 employees, family members, and friends pledged to raise $175 each, but they exceeded their goal by a landslide and raised over $15,868. George Morales, a Paul Mitchell School owner and Advanced Academy team member, led the way by raising more than $5,000. Paul Mitchell The School Sherman Oaks held a cut-a-thon at the event, raising $2,221 for the Challenged Athletes Foundation.
FREE HUGS DAY – On September 21, Paul Mitchell Schools opened their doors and took our culture to the streets for our third annual Free Hugs Day. Inspired by the popular YouTube video featuring Juan Mann, the event put smiles on a lot of faces and attracted nationwide media attention. Check out the photos and videos on our Web site photo gallery and YouTube channel.

PASSIONATELY PINK FOR THE CURE – Throughout October, Paul Mitchell Schools went Passionately Pink for the Cure, raising $67,833 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation and turning America into a sea of pink highlights and pink hair extensions.
-
Paul Mitchell The School St. Louis raised $475 with casual days and a team of 16 staff and family members participating in a Purple Strides walk/run event. They raised another $1,200 by selling T-shirts with their school logo in pink – a very hot item! - In North Carolina, Paul Mitchell The School Fayetteville’s Design Team took part in a Zombie Walk during Halloween, raising $1,500 for the cause.
- Paul Mitchell The School Schenectady raised $750 with their cut-a-thon, and they were on TV!
-
Paul Mitchell The School Chicago’s student council held bake sales, sold pink ribbons for guests and Future Professionals to wear, and collected money for Pink Dress-Up Days. Future Professionals donated “pink” services throughout the month: guests paid to have strips of pink hair color, and some even colored their whole heads pink! The Design Team’s cut-a-thon for the UIC volleyball team also contributed to the $1,371 grand total. - The Be Nice (Or Else!) team at Paul Mitchell The School Tysons Corner took complete control of their Style for a Cause Fashion Show, including flyers, banners, printing, tickets, programs, decorating, planning, and inviting surprise guest speakers. The show raised $1,600 in addition to $1,000 from other October events.
“Giving back is a cornerstone of our unique culture at Paul Mitchell Schools,” Winn Claybaugh said. “Partnering with the Komen organization and their Passionately Pink campaign is just one of the many ways our Future Professionals show their passion and compassion in their local communities.”
WORLD FOOD DAY – The Be Nice (Or Else!) team from Paul Mitchell The School St. Louis took part in World Food Day at the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center in St. Louis, Missouri, on October 14. Future Professionals helped fill 28,500 food bags for people facing critical food shortages in sub-Saharan Africa. The Future Professionals also saw some of the research being done at the agricultural center, whose goal is to find long-term solutions to the scourge of hunger and malnutrition in this developing part of the world.

Paul Mitchell Schools Support Boys & Girls Clubs
Paul Mitchell Cofounder John Paul DeJoria is a proud alumnus of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America. In his honor during the 2011 holiday season, Paul Mitchell and Paul Mitchell Schools hosted a variety of events to support this wonderful organization and their efforts to create great futures for young people.
-
The Academy Waukesha’s Be Nice (Or Else!) Team raised funds to purchase over 50 toys for the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Milwaukee. - Paul Mitchell The School Jacksonville created magic with an ornament-making class at their local club. Future Professional Michelle Kauffman said, “It was really enjoyable to show the little ones that mixing colors could create other colors. The look on their faces was truly inspiring, and I think they thought it was magic!”
- Paul Mitchell The School Dallas, Houston, and many others held toy drives and delivered gifts to their local clubs. “It was a joy to see their faces light up at just the sight of so many presents,” said Dallas staff member Koree Prewitt.
-
Michael’s School of Hair Design & Esthetics, A Paul Mitchell Partner School,
hosted the Boys and Girls Club four times for an assortment of events including styles, manicures, Wash House experiences, makeup applications, and a princess party. - Future Professionals from Bella Capelli Academy, Wisconsin Academy, Paul Mitchell The School Michigan, San Francisco Institute of Esthetics and Cosmetology, and Paul Mitchell The School Santa Barbara visited or hosted local Boys and Girls Clubs, performing mini-makeovers, face painting, school tours, and other fun activities.
- Paul Mitchell The School San Diego held a holiday party at their local club, playing volleyball, painting nails, decorating cookies and cupcakes, and providing take-home goodie bags with handwritten notes for each child.
-
Paul Mitchell The School Orlando presented an anti-bullying “Be Nice” message to their local Boys and Girls Club. - The Temple, A Paul Mitchell Partner School, a Silver Level Sponsor for their local club, signed on for three more years of continued support for an after-school program, career discovery events, and quarterly health and hygiene classes. They also “adopted” all 80 club attendees and provided haircuts and holiday gifts.
3,216 Jamaican Schoolchildren Get Books from Paul Mitchell School Owners
Kingston-born Dale Jones and his wife Kimberlyn Jones, owners of Paul Mitchell The School Nashville, were among the local and international sponsors and volunteers who personally delivered books to 3,216 children throughout Jamaica. The effort was part of the Palmyra Foundation’s annual book distribution to 4-and-5-year-old schoolchildren in that country’s towns, mountains, and rural areas.
Dale and Kimberlyn heard about the organization through its Web site. “After reviewing the video from last year’s book distribution, we were convinced that we needed to do something to help,” Dale said. “It is one thing to send money, but it is another to contribute your time to make a difference in children’s lives. The joy on the faces of the children was priceless to see in person. They were very thankful and overjoyed with our presence at each school.”
Under the banner “The future is bright, when you can read and write,” the Palmyra Foundation provided each child with a book bag containing a pack of crayons, a pencil, a colorful 300-page BrainQuest Workbook, and one or two Scholastic reading books, valued at approximately $30 per pack.
Founded by Robert Trotta, developer of the Palmyra Resort and Spa, the Palmyra Foundation aims to help eradicate illiteracy, promote a positive outlook of prosperity, improve self-esteem, introduce community role models, and ultimately give the hope of success to children growing up under challenging circumstances. By the end of this year’s book distribution, more than 100 international volunteers delivered 79,000 books to 18,000 children in 80 schools across Jamaica’s 14 parishes, at a value of approximately $500,000.

The Lab Lends a Hand at Project Homeless Connect

Wil Clayborn has his beard trimmed by Drea Boland of The Lab, A Paul Mitchell Partner School, at Mercer County’s eighth Project Homeless Connect.
Twice a year, The Lab, A Paul Mitchell Partner School participates in Trenton, New Jersey’s Project Homeless Connect. The one-day event provides housing, services, hospitality, and—thanks to volunteers like the team from The Lab—free haircuts.
For the past three years, Education Leader LuAnne Rickey has rallied Future Professionals and staff members for a day that typically consists of over 100 haircuts. At the January 2012 event, LuAnne and eight Future Professionals gave 114 haircuts!
School Director Lori Paul said, “LuAnne has really taken this event and made it her own. It means so much to her to participate in it and to help people look good and feel better. This is just one of the many reasons we love LuAnne!”
If You See It, You Own It
In our BE NICE culture and community, we have a belief that says, “If you see it, you own it.” For instance, if you see a gum wrapper on the floor in the reception area, the fact that you saw it means that you own it. And what do you do with gum wrappers? You pick them up and throw them away. It makes no difference that they’re not your gum wrappers.
If you see that morale is low and people aren’t being nice to each other, then you own it. It doesn’t matter that you may not be the boss or the cause of the low morale. What matters is that you own it, and there is much you can do about it.
The “old school” of working with people taught leaders to dictate, control, manipulate, and police. Have you ever worked in that type of environment? How did it make you feel? Did it work? Were you happy? Were you excited about making your boss more money?
The new school of working with people advocates a different practice, one that translates into true leadership. It calls upon every person to assume the responsibility for inspiring each other. The new school is a bit radical because it may require you to adopt a different job description, which includes:
- Inspiring People: When you walk through the doors to your work or school, does your presence in the building inspire people, or does it poison and intimidate them? Are you the type of person who brightens up a room by leaving? To inspire means that you possess hope, happiness, and an attitude of fun, and you want others to have those things for themselves.
- Being a Coach and a Cheerleader: Sometimes the best support you can give people at work is not to lend a helping hand but just to let them know you believe in them. Being a coach and cheerleader requires nothing more than simple words and gestures that say, “You can do it. I believe in you. You’re capable, competent, and a true contributor.” Receiving praise and acknowledgement is a basic human need, right up there with oxygen. Maybe your credit card is maxed out, but your generosity for acknowledging and celebrating other human beings won’t ever run dry.
- Setting a Good Example: “If it’s to be, it’s up to me.” It’s so easy to focus on what other people need to learn, but it’s not your job to fix and change everyone else. Your job is to fix and change yourself, and that can be the best lesson and example so others will want to improve themselves.
- Empowering People: The word empowerment blends a feeling of hope with the idea of growth. When you empower someone, you offer them tools, resources, training, support, a little bit of guidance, and a lot of belief in their ability. You give them hope and set them up to win. At the same time, you let them make a few mistakes, just as you did when you were learning and growing.
Above all else, the new school of leadership requires everyone in the organization to live by the philosophy:
“I am responsible!”
David Lowry, Class of 2009
Paul Mitchell The School Houston
In the summer of 2008, David Lowry was an Adaptive-level student and an 11-year, pack-a-day cigarette smoker when he met Paul Mitchell Schools Dean and Cofounder Winn Claybaugh. “I became completely enthralled with the BE NICE culture and wanted nothing more than to work at a Paul Mitchell Gathering,” David recalls. “I asked Winn what I needed to do, and he told me that because it was a school-related event, I wouldn’t be allowed to smoke.” David’s school owners, Rosie and Sandy Matos, challenged him to not only go smoke-free for the event, but to also quit outright. Being the competitive type, David accepted the challenge and quit cold turkey. “It was the best decision I ever made,” he says. “I began thinking, If I can do this, then I can achieve anything I set my sights on. It’s time to make a name for myself in the industry I love the most!”
Immediately after graduation, David began working at Salon Matos as Rosie Matos’ rising star, and became a Cutting Specialist in Training at Paul Mitchell The School Houston. “I wanted to share and give back to the place that got me where I am today,” he says. “Being on the other side of the learning process opened my eyes to a passion I thought I would never have: teaching! There’s nothing more satisfying than watching the light bulbs go off when a Future Professional has that aha moment. I have become addicted to teaching and sharing information as well as being a lifelong learner and pushing myself to be the best.”
David’s love of teaching landed him an opportunity to become a John Paul Mitchell Systems National Educator. “This was the greatest personal achievement in my short career,” he says. “I have since taught numerous classes and worked at some of the biggest hair shows in our industry, both on stage and backstage.” As a National Educator, David now travels with PAC and Intercoiffure member Rosie Matos as her sidekick and “partner in crime.”
David’s Advice for Future Professionals:
-
As stylists, we have an important job and we should take it seriously: we make people look and feel AMAZING! - If you want something so bad it hurts, GO GET IT! Always follow your heart.
- Be a visionary. Say yes to everything and don’t be influenced by resisters. They will only hold you back from your true potential.
- A great attitude and strong commitment will get you further in this industry than technical skills alone.
- Always be coachable. If I hadn’t taken my coaching from Winn, Rosie, and Sandy, I would not have the career I have today.
“David leaves a long-lasting impression with his attitude and passion for everything he does. When he puts his mind to something, he doesn’t stop until he achieves success. We are all so proud of his choice to make his health a priority, stop smoking, and be a mentor to many.”

Litterbugs Learn to Give Back
This story starts out badly but ends happily for everyone involved. Several months ago, Kahi Pacarro noticed a Paul Mitchell Future Professional flicking a cigarette butt onto the ground outside of Paul Mitchell The School Honolulu. Kahi represents Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii, a nonprofit organization that inspires local communities to care for their coastlines through hands-on beach cleanups. Kahi confronted the student, who unfortunately did not pick up the cigarette butt and instead just walked away.
Undaunted, Kahi e-mailed Paul Mitchell Schools Dean and Cofounder Winn Claybaugh, asking that the school conduct some type of education about littering and have the students clean up their mess. “I know Paul Mitchell wants to retain the positive opinion the public has,” Kahi wrote, “and I believe you will do what is right.”
Winn immediately replied and the school sprang into action, addressing the students that same day, adding daily “clean sweeps” of the parking lot to make sure it would stay smoke-free, and immediately scheduling a parking lot cleanup. School owner Joannie Rossiter said, “It took four hours for our students and staff to clean up the whole parking lot. We did it in two days, on our free time. We are proud to say our campus is a smoke-free campus!”
Kahi also visited the school to talk about Sustainable Coastlines and its mission, and to invite Future Professionals to participate in a Kailua Beach cleanup. Paul Mitchell Future Professionals, faculty, and family members were among the 192 volunteers who picked up 550 pounds of refuse from the beach and surrounding areas. “It was a pleasure having the school participate with us,” Kahi said. “It really showed their dedication not only to their profession but to supporting the environment and local communities. Our participants enjoyed the giveaways from Paul Mitchell and we hope to have the school participating with us in our next beach cleanup.”
