May 2010: Magic of Memories Special Edition
by Paul Mitchell Schools on 5/31/2010Index
Dear Future Professionals and Industry Friends,
When Winn Claybaugh contacted Marie and me with an offer to raise money for the Children’s Miracle Network, we were surprised, to say the least. It’s not every day that someone volunteers to donate $100,000, but that’s exactly what the Paul Mitchell Schools did and we couldn’t be more honored.
We first met some of you at your annual Caper event in Las Vegas, where we were so impressed by your passion and energy. Then there was the Magic of Memories Dinner, where we joined you to celebrate your incredible FUNraising success. I was blown away when Winn told me that, due to all your hard work and the success of this year’s FUNraising campaign, the check to Children’s Miracle Network is not for $100,000 as originally promised but for $200,000! Talk about over delivering. I guess that’s to be expected from the Paul Mitchell family. You guys are amazing!
Prior to my performance that night, Winn asked me if I wanted to relax and prepare in the “green room,” but I told him I absolutely wanted to be included with the Paul Mitchell group before, during, and after my performance. I can sit in a green room anytime, but I wouldn’t miss a chance to experience the Paul Mitchell enthusiasm.
In the last few months, you’ve shown that giving back is not just about raising money. I’m thrilled that you’ve been reaching out locally to the 170-plus Children’s Miracle Network hospitals, and I ask you to continue giving your love, service, and passion. I promise that you will receive even more than you give, because that’s what happened to me years ago when I first got involved.
I know that Leeza Gibbons, Larry King, and John Paul DeJoria join me in thanking you on behalf of the wonderful organizations they represent. Congratulations to all of you for not letting the economy dictate your potential for raising money, awareness, and making a difference in the lives of others. Instead of getting discouraged by all the negative news, you raised a record $1.2 million! Please stay true to your beliefs and keep up the wonderful work that you do.
In my family, we were raised to believe that we all have a responsibility to give back and help others. I feel like I’ve found an extended family in Paul Mitchell Schools. Thank you for making me feel like part of your family.
Sincerely,
Donny Osmond
Kathy Buckley, known around the world as America’s first hearing-impaired comedian, has inspired hundreds of thousands of people with her story of overcoming some of the most difficult obstacles imaginable. Despite a hearing loss that impeded her speech and language development, sexual molestation, a horrendous accident in which she was run over by a jeep and literally died in the ambulance, and two bouts with cancer, Kathy has demonstrated a lifetime of determination, grace, and especially humor.
Kathy’s popular appeal and refreshing wit have landed her on countless TV shows and in numerous national magazines. People named her one of their most touching stories of 1997. Her critically acclaimed one-woman off-Broadway show, “Now Hear This,” won the Los Angeles Theater Ovation Award and the LA entertainment industry’s Media Access Award as Best Play of the Year.
“You guys are my heroes. To contribute to make a difference in people’s lives is definitely living life. Thank you for touching the lives of our children at No Limits. WOO, HOO!”
— Kathy Buckley
Kathy is far more than a popular comic. She tirelessly performs on behalf of nonprofit and educational organizations and serves as the national spokesperson for No Limits, a nonprofit organization and school that provides educational programs and accessibility for deaf and hard-of-hearing children. (Paul Mitchell Schools’ annual FUNraising campaign donated $20,000 to No Limits this year.) Kathy has appeared at the Paul Mitchell School Owners Summit, Education Leadership Training, February 2010 Caper (in front of 2,000 staff and Future Professionals), and the Magic of Memories Dinners in 2009 and 2010, where she became an instant favorite mentor in the Paul Mitchell School world. As a motivational speaker, she eagerly spreads the message that anything can be achieved when the heart and mind work together.

In spite of the never-ending reports about the failing economic environment, Paul Mitchell Schools spent the months of February through April raising over $1.2 million for their annual charity “FUNraising” campaign!
Now in its seventh year, the annual campaign surpassed all previous records and brought the combined total to more than $4.6 million.
Asked why the schools hold the annual campaign, Dean and Cofounder Winn Claybaugh said, “Giving back is a cornerstone of our philosophy. Of course we teach the skills needed for a successful career, but we also teach the skills needed for a successful life, and those include being nice and giving back.”
Rather than seeking huge corporate donations, Future Professionals raised most of the money through grassroots events like cut-a-thons, hair shows, car washes, bake sales, and “Casual for a Cause” days, with donations averaging $5 to $10. The funds will be distributed to the Leeza Gibbons Memory Foundation, the Larry King Cardiac Foundation, Children’s Miracle Network, Food 4 Africa, and the schools’ own nonprofit organization, the Andrew Gomez Dream Foundation.
Winn Claybaugh announced the results at a gala dinner at the Island Hotel in Newport Beach, California, on April 25, 2010, where he was joined by co-host Leeza Gibbons, entertainer Donny Osmond, Paul Mitchell CEO and Cofounder John Paul DeJoria, Paul Mitchell co-owner and salon owner Angus Mitchell, and other celebrity guests and representatives from the sponsored charities.
“Once again the Future Professionals from Paul Mitchell Schools exceeded all expectations, raising over $1.2 million. This was even after raising $100,000 for Haiti relief just prior to this campaign. Year after year, these Future Professionals show up, lead by example, and inspire us all to make a difference in the lives of those who need help most. I feel so blessed to have the embrace of all the ‘Paul Mitchell people’ — simply the coolest people on earth!”
— Leeza Gibbons
As a special surprise, Donny Osmond brought his band and sang several songs for the crowd. Representing the Larry King Cardiac Foundation, Larry King, Larry King Jr., and Biggest Loser chef and cookbook author Devin Alexander took time to pose for pictures with all of the school owners.
Other special guests included Olympic gold medalist Peter Vidmar, Survivor finalist Alexis Jones, comedian Kathy Buckley, Invisible Children cofounder Bobby Bailey, and motivational speakers Patrick John Hughes and Patrick Henry Hughes, who spoke at the owner’s Summit that weekend.
“What a delightful evening. Not just to have Donny Osmond, Leeza Gibbons, Larry King, and Winn Claybaugh take the time to individually take a photo with each of our 104 school owners, but to think that the great Donny Osmond was so appreciative for the donation to Children’s Miracle Network that he brought his band in to do a fabulous performance for the whole crowd. These are some of the extra-exciting ways one sees how giving back truly pays back.”
— John Paul DeJoria, Chairman and CEO of John Paul Mitchell Systems
"My dad and I very much enjoyed our time with Paul Mitchell Schools. It was an exciting Sunday evening with school owners and Future Professionals at the FUNraising event. Dad and I had no idea Paul Mitchell did so much giving to so many worthwhile organizations throughout America and even overseas! And having Leeza Gibbons and Donny Osmond entertain, along with Winn Claybaugh, made for quite a memorable event. We were honored to be invited to such an event, and to have the opportunity to share our story with such special people made the Summit event spectacular.”
— Patrick Henry Hughes
“This is truly a night I will always remember. Not only were the results of the FUNraising memorable, but the interaction of the Future Professionals with each other, their positive attitudes toward life, and the love that they have for what they do was truly reflected in their willingness to raise money for others. I left that night inspired by their energy.”
— Rod Hamson, Vice President Sponsor Relations for Children's Miracle Network

Although inspiration is ethereal in nature, it has teeth with Paul Mitchell. I count myself part of the fold, and we say in no uncertain terms: Bring it, there is an answer, and it starts with us."

The Andrew Gomez Dream Foundation helps disadvantaged or hard-hit cosmetologists and cosmetology-related enterprises. Funds have been used to help hairdressers affected by Hurricane Katrina, assist Future Professionals affected by the 2007 San Diego wildfires, and support breast cancer causes after one of our colleagues was diagnosed with the disease. Funds have also been used to provide new salon professionals with educational experiences they probably would not otherwise have for many years to come, such as tuition and transportation to haircutting classes, a chance to assist backstage at a major fashion show, or a weekend educational retreat.
“In our seven-year-plus history, the Andrew Gomez Dream Foundation has not paid one penny in rent, utilities, accounting, attorney’s fees, or salaries. All services, resources, and talent are donated so all of the funds can be used for our Future Professionals and to help the organizations we support, including Habitat for Humanity, the NCA Disaster Relief Fund, Cut It Out, Look Good Feel Better, the Pay It Forward Foundation, Sister Bonnie’s Franciscan Haircuts from the Heart, and many other individuals and groups.”
